Asymmetrical Hearing: Notes from a Sbilenco Ear

NINAJIRACHI - I Love My Computer (2025)

Artists have never been independent from the time and place in which they lived. Fresh, sincere, raw, and sophisticated at the same time. Press play and you get what is already clear from the cover: an apparent chaos, where every object is exactly where it should be. Organized and domesticated minds might find it confusing or not ā€œdanceā€ enough (a category that, after all, is perhaps used too reductively on streaming platforms to describe this album). Because this is not really about labels; this is an album where each track opens up a different world, whose synthesis tells you clearly that here, I do what you want and I do it this way: if you don’t like it, you can leave, no hard feelings. Wysiwig: by looking closely at the cover, you can already tell what to expect: lots of samples, lots of electronics, and atmospheres that don’t shy away from Japanese/Asian influences. The noise sections are great, maybe a bit too clean, but great nonetheless. But above all, the MEANING of the album is great. Not one track more than another, but the whole as it presents itself. The electric radiator is a nice touch, because it brings you back to a real, analog atmosphere and dimension, where the cold seeps in and you have to defend yourself or at least survive. Yes, because this is an album that strips you bare in front of a real reality: even sounds that are childish and ā€œcuteā€ can become moments of distortion and alteration of reality, in an unexpected way that makes you want to turn up the volume senselessly. It’s a sly and enjoyable record, because it requires dedicated listening: you can’t just press play anywhere and at any time of the day.
