Asymmetrical Hearing: Notes from a Sbilenco Ear

FLEA - Honora (2026)

A kind of aching languor, a feeling of melancholy, yearning, nostalgia, even Wehmut moves through me. Because this is an intimate masterpiece.

Smooth, languid sounds. Everything sits exactly where it should. The collaborations are excellent — except for one I would have gladly skipped: as useless as he is overrated. Flea’s delicacy and sensitivity are beautiful. You can hear Frusciante in those reiterated rustlings, an unmistakable stylistic signature.

Maggot Brain makes me wonder… Is this cover a way of asserting personal taste? Of showing everyone how well you can play other instruments?

I keep thinking: why not compose something equally iconic, something that actually leaves a mark? Then again, it’s been done many times already…
